Unfortunately, at this time we are unable to accept plastic bags for recycling.

A new law, AB 2449, requires drugstores and grocery stores of at least 10,000 square feet to offer in-store recycling programs for plastic bags. As an alternative to plastic bags, some stores now have reusable bags available for purchase, generally made of light-weight, washable material. These reusable bags usually come with money-saving incentives, as many stores offer a discount each time a customer uses a reusable bag in lieu of a paper or plastic carryout bag. So, on your next trip to the grocery store don't forget your shopping list and plastic bags to recycle!

We do not accept Styrofoam. For all practical purposes Styrofoam is not recyclable. Please do not put any #6 plastics in your cart, even if the item has a recycling logo. This includes Styrofoam products as well as non-Styrofoam #6 plastics. Want to learn more about plastics? Click here.

Before discarding Styrofoam peanuts, consider taking them to your local UPS or mail packaging store. These stores will accept them for reuse at no charge. If you are throwing Styrofoam peanuts in your garbage cart please secure them in a plastic bag to prevent neighborhood spills.

Allied Waste understands scavenging is a nuisance, an invasion of privacy and impacts our local cities' diversion rates. From our perspective, we consider scavenging to be theft. Allied Waste is willing to support the cities in their efforts to prosecute any individual or individuals that are caught in the act of scavenging recyclable materials from our containers and who may also be violating any City ordinances in the process.

If you are currently having an issue with your recycling materials (this includes from residential carts, business containers and loose cardboard) being taken by someone other than Allied Waste we suggest you contact your local Code Enforcement.

The license plate and a description of the vehicle will be helpful.

Setting up a commercial recycling program is easy with a free waste audit and program assistance from Allied. We will come out to your business, assess your service level and develop a recycling program that will work best for your company. Our new commercial program includes all recyclables in one cart or dumpster, so sorting is minimal. Recycling carts and dumpsters can be serviced weekly or more often in order to tailor a program to your specific site needs. The Contra Costa Transfer & Recovery Station, located at 951 Waterbird Way in Martinez, accepts household, commercial & industrial refuse. The Transfer Station is open 8 am - 5 pm, 7 days a week, except holidays.

For those rare times that Allied does not pick up a customer's garbage/recycling/yard waste, the primary reasons are:

• The container was not left at the curb by 5:30 a.m. or our driver did not have access to your containers.
• The container was overloaded. The lid must be entirely closed.
• The container was too heavy. There is a 60-pound limit per cart. Dirt, concrete, asphalt and rocks should NOT be placed in your trash cart.

Old needles and medications should NEVER be flushed down the toilet.

Sharps (needles & lancets) are illegal to discard in the household garbage or recycling. Old needles must be disposed of at licensed facilities or mail-back programs. Please visit our Sharps page for more information.

Allied Waste does not collect Household Hazardous Waste. Household Hazardous Wastes are illegal to discard in your garbage or recycling. Paints, chemicals, solvents, personal care products, household cleaning products, motor oil, mercury thermometers, and batteries must be taken to your local household hazardous waste facility.

Motor Oil & Oil Filters: Motor oil and oil filters can be recycled curbside on your recycling pick-up day. Pour used motor oil (maximum 3 gallons per pick-up) into a clear container (e.g. a milk jug) and place NEXT TO (not inside) your recycling cart. Used oil filters should be put in Ziploc bags and placed NEXT TO (not inside) your recycling cart.

Large amounts of cooking oil should be recycled at a Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
